Delaware Opens League Action Saturday Against No. 8 Elon

NEWARK, Del. – Chosen as the preseason favorite to win the conference, the University of Delaware men's soccer team welcomes No. 8 Elon to Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium Saturday evening for the first of eight Colonial Athletic Association regular season matches for the Blue Hens.

Delaware continued to have multiple shots and scoring opportunities, but Virginia Tech was too much to handle as the Hokies defeated the Blue Hens, 4-1, Tuesday evening. UD (3-4-1) saw its first and lone goal of the evening in the 10th minute as Dani Laguna received a cross from Thomas de Villardi at the top of the box to tie the game at 1-1. VT picked up the 2-1 lead in the 41st minute off a penalty kick, and game-winning goal, from Merlin Baus. Alessandro Mion tacked on two more goals in the 66th and 75th minutes as the Hokies logged the 4-1 score. Blai Palmí collected two saves in 90 minutes played while Ben Lundgaard accumulated five saves for the Hokies.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Delaware has lost three straight for the first time since the 2012 season.
· The Blue Hens are 37-76-15 (.348) all-time in 13 seasons of CAA action. In the past five seasons, Delaware has posted a record of 22-17-7 (.554) against CAA opponents.
· Since 2011, UD has earned two berths to the NCAA Tournament with a CAA Tournament Championship in 2011, CAA Regular Season title in 2014 and two CAA Tournament Finals appearances.
· The Hens are 5-7-1 overall in CAA openers and have won five straight dating to 2010.
· Guillermo Delgado is tied for third place in school history with 70 career points alongside John Petito (1978-82).
· Delgado's 31 goals are third-most in school history and four shy of second place, currently held by John McCloskey (1975-78).
· Delgado posted the sixth multi-goal game of his career against Lehigh and currently leads the Hens with four goals this season.
· With 12 career assists, Joe Dipre is tied for eighth all-time in program history with John McCloskey (1975-78) and Roger Morley (1966-68).
· Chris Little (UNC Pembroke '00) is in his second year with the Phoenix and has posted a career mark of 16-7-4 (.667).
ABOUT NO. 8 ELON
The Phoenix are off to one of the best starts in program history with a 7-1 overall record (1-0 CAA) and its highest ever ranking at No. 8 in the NSCAA Top 25. Elon suffered its first setback of 2015 this past Tuesday with a 3-1 loss at South Carolina. Freshman Nicholas O'Callaghan was named Monday the CAA Player and Rookie of the Week after posting his first career points with a goal and assist in a win over Drexel in addition to aiding the Phoenix backline to a shutout over a Wake Forest program that is ranked in the top five nationally in goals scored. Nine different goal scorers have contributed offensively for Elon as senior Eduardo Alvarez and rookie Jaiden Fortune are tied for the team-lead in total points with nine. Redshirt freshman Matthew Jegler has seen all 720 minutes in the net for the Phoenix and has allowed 0.75 goals per game with a save percentage of .786.
