STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware women's indoor track & field squad posted five top 10 finishes, set a two school freshman records, and had two ECAC qualifying performances Saturday evening at the Great Dane Invitational hosted by the University at Albany at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Freshman Ashley Bailey led the Hens with a fourth place finish in the pole vault with her height of 11-feet, 9.75-inches qualifying her for the ECAC Championships in March and tying the school record for a freshman. Sophomore Tyra Reid also qualified for the ECAC meet with a sixth place finish in the 200 meters (career-best 24.85) while freshman Carly Pettipaw set a UD freshman record in the 500 meters with a 12th place showing (1:16.29).
Pettipaw broke the previous UD freshman 500 meter mark of 1:16.85 by Alexandra Carroll in 2012 while Pinkney bested the freshman 60 meters record of 7.81 by Vicky Caruso in 2010.
“The team did well among some top ranked teams and professional athletes,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “I am proud of the ECAC qualifiers and freshman school records that were achieved today. There were a few athletes who did not do as well as expected but we have to focus on the work and victories ahead. We have the ability to dominate events but it will take some extra courage and individual confidence.”
Delaware earned 29 total points to finish seventh in the team standings out of 26 schools and club teams competing. Maryland captured the team title with 104 points followed by Villanova, Buffalo, Albany, and St. John's in the top five.
In addition to Bailey and Reid, Delaware had three other top 10 performances as senior Amira Idris was fifth in the triple jump (38-11.5), Liz McGroarty was sixth in the mile run (5:01.62), and Reid joined Pettipaw, Michelle Simmons, and Carolyn Darr for a 10th place showing in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:56.07).
Reid also was 13th in the 400 meters (57.09) while Idris was 16th in the long jump (17-2) and Bailey was 18th in the long jump (16-11.5).
Delaware will continue action next weekend when the Hens take part in the Tiger Open at Princeton University on Saturday, Jan. 23.
