Twenty-one UD Swimmers & Divers Earn First Place Finishes as Hens Easily Sweep Iona

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming squads both won in convincing fashion Sunday afternoon as 21 different Blue Hen athletes captured first place finishes to lead the Blue Hens to a dual meet sweep over Iona at Rawstrom Natatorium.
The Delaware men won 13 total events on the way to a 177-103 victory while the Blue Hen women won 13 different events to register a 187-99 triumph over Iona. The Delaware men improved to 4-4 with the dual win while the UD women won their seventh straight dual competition to improve to 10-1 and reach the double figure win mark for the second straight year.
Iona, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, fell to 6-6 on the men's side and 7-7 on the women's side.
Delaware had six women win multiple events and five men capture multiple first place finishes.
On the women's side, freshman Gabby Acker won both the 500 freestyle (5:15.32) and 1,000 freestyle (10:37.97), senior Alyssa Sanders won the 100 backstroke (59.40) and 50 freestyle (24.48) while swimming the first leg of the 200 medley relay (1:48.01), senior diver Kristina Congdon won both the one-meter (306.90) and three-meter (347.85) events, and freshman Mina Feyrer captured the 200 butterfly (2:08.14) and was part of the 200 medley relay team.
For the Delaware men, sophomore Patrick Savidge captured the 500 freestyle (4:36.19), 1,000 freestyle (9:27.94), and 200 breaststroke (4:36.19), junior Cory Camp won both the 200 butterfly (1:57.27) and 200 backstroke (1:55.30), junior Tomas Elder won the 50 freestyle (21.92) and 100 freestyle (47.97) and swam the final leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:37.63), senior Luke Winkler won both the one-meter (309.52) and three-meter (306.82) diving events, and senior Alex Tooley won the 200 breaststroke (2:11.05) and swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay.
Several of the final races were swam as exhibitions by the Blue Hens, including a first-ever attempt at the 100 individual medley. Although their scores and finishes did not count in the final dual meet totals, Delaware's Sanders swam to a top time of 59.37 and junior Alex Hillsley had a top UD time 52.21 to establish school records in the event.
