WILMINGTON, Del. – Delaware opened spring play Sunday afternoon at DuPont Country Club, but the results were not in the Hens favor as Villanova defeated UD, 6-1.
After dropping the doubles point, the Blue Hens (0-1) tied the match at 1-1 after sophomore Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall) picked up a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Luis Miranda in the second flight.
Delaware forced the fifth and sixth flights into third sets.
In the No. 5 spot, freshman Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day) fell to Tommy Dodson, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Senior Tim Puterio (Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) captured the first set but Matt Phelps came from behind with the 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 decision.
“The men played a tough match today. Unfortunately, the score does not reflect how close each individual match actually was.”
