STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Sophomore Sarah Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.) won the shot put and posted a second place finish in the weight throw to lead the University of Delaware as the Blue Hens women's indoor track & field squad opened the 2016 season at the Villanova Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Park Athletics Complex Friday evening.
Overall the Blue Hens collected 17 top 10 finishes on the day in a meet that also included host Villanova and many of the top teams and unattached athletes in the East. There was no team scoring.
“Today was a good day,” said head coach Wendy McFarlane. “Our athletes came close to ECAC marks, we had some personal best performances, and a few athletes made it on to the all-time top 10 list. We had great team energy. I look forward to seeing the ladies improve as they get more opportunities to compete.”
Hillman, who earned All-East honors in the shot put as a freshman in 2015, was the Hens' lone winner Friday as she won the event with a throw of 42-feet, 6-inches. She also placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 52-feet, 3.75-inches, just over three feet shy of the winning distance.
Also for the Hens, freshman Jeannette Bendolph (Caesar Rodney/Camden, Del.) was second in the 800 meters, sophomore Liz McGroarty (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, Pa.) was third in the 1,000 meters (2:56.28), freshman Lauren Zodl (Pinelands Regional/Little Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) was third in the 3,000 meters, and senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) was fourth in the long jump (17-11).
Delaware will continue action next Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Blue Hens head back to Ocean Breeze Park to compete in the Albany Great Dane Classic.
