RICHMOND, Va. -- Thanks to a career day in a near win on Saturday, University of Delaware standout running back Wes Hills has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Football Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Hills, a redshirt junior criminal justice major from Wildwood, N.J. (Wildwood High School), was honored for his outstanding performance in the Blue Hens' heart-breaking 28-21 loss to Maine Saturday at Delaware Stadium. For his efforts, he also was named an honorable mention national Offensive Player of the Week by STATS Inc.
Hills carried 24 times for a career-high 242 yards and two touchdowns, including a 17-yard scoring run in the first half and a 61-yard jaunt up the middle with 5:01 left to play that tied the game at 21-21. He also caught a pass for 14 yards in the fourth quarter.
The 242 yards were the fourth-most in UD history and the most since 2007 when All-American Omar Cuff gained a school-record 288 yards in an NCAA Tournament victory over Delaware State at Delaware Stadium.
The 200-yard effort was Hills' second of the year as he can for 212 yards and two touchdowns in a season-opening 56-14 win over Delaware State back on Sept. 1.
He becomes just the second player in UD history to record two 200-yard rushing efforts in a career - joining Cuff - and becomes one of only two college players in the nation at the NCAA FCS level this year to have multiple 200-yard efforts. The 242 yards were also the third highest total among FCS players this season.
For the season, Hills has carried 52 times for 533 yards and five touchdowns. He ranks fourth in the nation at the FCS level with 133.3 yards per game and ranks No. 2 in yards per carry at 10.2 yards per attempt.
Also earning weekly awards in the CAA were CAA Defensive Player of the Week Jaheem Woods (Stony Brook); Special Teams Player of the Week Morgan Ellman (New Hampshire); and Rookie of the Week Deontez Thompson (Richmond).
Delaware (2-3, 0-2 CAA) will return to action this Saturday when the Hens travel to William & Mary for a 3:30 p.m. encounter in Williamsburg, Va.
