HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware is heading back to the CAA Men's Soccer Championship Final for the third straight season as the Blue Hens defeated the College of Charleston, 2-1, in Friday's semifinals action at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Blue Hens senior and CAA Player of the Year Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) scored with less than two minutes remaining to lift second-seeded UD (11-7-1) over the sixth-seeded Cougars (6-9-3).
Delaware will face William & Mary in Sunday's title game at 2:30 p.m. live on ASN, CAA.tv and Roku.
Despite out-shooting CofC, 14-3, in the first half, the Hens could not break through as the two teams went into the break scoreless.
The stalemate continued well into the second half. Delgado had an opportunity in the 71st minute but headed it just high. Junior Thibault Philippe (Saint Brieuc, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) finally broke through in the 74th minute as he put home a free kick by senior Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) for his first tally of the season.
With 11:15 remaining, Delaware keeper Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) received a yellow card after a collision in the box, setting up a penalty shot for CofC. The Cougars capitalized as sophomore Leland Archer potted his second goal of the year and tied the game 1-1.
It looked like the game was headed for overtime in the 89th minute when Delgado got to a ball that was bobbled in the box and tapped it in the open net. It was Delgado's league-leading 12th goal of the year and the 49th of his career.
Morton was held without a save while Biran Kilgallon registered four for the Cougars.
“This was a terrific game tonight with plenty of excitement on both ends of the field. Charleston was a determined opponent and we needed to be at our best to push through until the end. This is the third finals appearance for a terrific senior group and I am excited for them and the team that they have this opportunity to play for another championship in a very competitive conference.”
