NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware never trailed in its Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball matchup with the College of Charleston Thursday night, but the Hens needed some clutch play down the stretch to hold on for a 62-59 victory at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (7-19, 2-13 CAA), who won for the second time in the last three games, knocked down five free throws in the final 33 seconds to gain the victory.
Delaware sophomore guard Kory Holden scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, senior forward Marvin King-Davis recorded his 12th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Anthony Mosley finished with 12 points, including all five of the late throws from the charity stripe.
College of Charleston (16-10, 8-7 CAA) placed three scorers in double figures led by 15 points from Cameron Johnson, 13 points and nine rebounds from Jarrell Brantley, and 11 points from Marquise Pointer. A halfcourt shot by Pointer at the buzzer hit the rim and bounced away to end the game.
“I thought we were really sharp and crisp offensively in the first half,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “To get a lot of contributions from a lot of guys, and to beat a good team like Charleston, is a good thing. We've put ourselves in a position to win during each of the last three games, and were able to finish tonight."
Delaware jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead just over four minutes into the game, and extended the margin to 25-11 following a Maurice Jeffers layup at the 6:10 mark. The Blue Hens led by at least eight points the rest of the period, while a three-pointer by Mosley in the final seconds gave UD a 33-22 margin at the break.
The Blue Hens still led by 10 points at 50-40 midway through the second half, before the Cougars scored seven straight to pull within 50-47 with 4:48 on the clock. UD countered with five straight to go back up eight, but Charleston again got to within three on a Johnson layup with 49 seconds left.
But Mosley hit a free throw, and after a Cougars turnover, the sophomore added two more to put Delaware up 60-54 with 12 seconds to go.
Charleston's Evan Bailey banked in a three-pointer with :03.2 left to again make it a three-point game, and the Cougars had a chance when King-Davis missed two free throws, but Pointer's halfcourt shot was just off the mark.
