NEWARK, Del. – The first day of the CAA Diving Championships proved to be successful for the University of Delaware as three Blue Hens took home medals Saturday at Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.
Senior Kristina Congdon (at left; Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led Delaware with a first place finish in the 3-meter championship with a score of 306.55.
Classmate Caitlin Stockwell (below right; San Jose, Calif./Presentation) collected a bronze medal in the 3-meter with a performance of 268.00.
Despite battling injury, junior Luke Winkler (Bethesda, Md./St. John's College HS) tallied a score of 270.45 for the bronze medal in the men's 1-meter championship.
Drexel's David Sanchez earned the men's gold medal with a score of 333.25.
[On Kristina Congdon]: “I see how hard she works every single day and to see her win today is great. There was a lot of tough competition from other schools and the name of the game is consistency. She showed that today and I'm extremely proud of what she was able to do.”
[On Luke Winkler]: “I'm extremely proud of what he accomplished today. It's been hard trying to figure out what he can do
in practice [with his injuries] and not pushing him too much. It was nerve-wracking earlier today as he skinned his toes during practice, but I'm glad that he was able to keep his head in the game and stay focused.”
[On hosting the CAA Diving Championships]: “As a former student-athlete at Delaware, I know what it was like having to travel to different schools and polls. It's really cool to host and have everyone come to our pool, our home. It means a lot to host and to be on the podium in front of our family and friends.”
Senior Kristina Congdon
“It's an intense atmosphere and I was afraid of messing up on the board. My body knows what to do, but it is the rolls that mess me up from time to time. Staying relaxed and having fun made the difference for me in the end. I didn't do so hot on the three-meter later year, so I knew I wanted to redeem myself. I knew I had the capability to do it, I just needed to be in the right mindset, work hard and do well in the individual meets which led me to do better than before.”
Junior Luke Winkler (at left)
[On competing injured]: “It has been difficult dealing with shin splints and some bone injuries. It has set me back in practice a bit, but I've learned that I need to take it easy. I've been able to push myself in the right areas and guidance from my coach and teammates has made all the difference.”
[On hosting the CAA Diving Championships]: “It's great. Having all of my teammates and friends here to support me has been tremendous.”
