Delaware Swimmers Post Three Top Five Finishes, Set School Record at Day 1 of CAA Championships

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming teams opened action at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Wednesday evening highlighted by the Delaware men setting a school record in the 800 freestyle relay at the Collegiate Schools Aquatic Center.
The second day of the four-day event will get underway Thursday morning with preliminaries at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The meet will continue Friday morning and conclude Saturday evening.
The Blue Hen men posted a third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay and fourth place showing in the 200 medley relay while the UD women took fifth place in the 800 freestyle relay before being disqualified for an early take-off in the 200 medley relay.
Drexel took the first day team lead on the men's side with 181 points followed by Delaware (128), UNCW (127), Towson (76), and William & Mary (40). On the women's side, Northeastern leads with 138 points followed by Towson (136), James Madison (112), Delaware (99), William & Mary (74), UNCW (73), and Drexel (56).
Delaware's 800 freestyle relay team of Cory Camp, Alex Tooley, Alex Hillsley, and Patrick Savidge placed third overall with a school-record time of 6:36.71, breaking the school mark of 6:36.78 set last season. The UD men's 200 medley relay team of Asher Kiely, Garrett Sharesky, Tomas Elder, and Nicholas Badsky placed fourth overall with a time of 1:30.06.
On the women's side, Delaware's 800 freestyle relay team of Sarah Braatz, Brittany Steinfeld, Samantha Marino, Dominique Montoya swam to a time of 7:27.83 to place fifth overall.
The Delaware men placed third in the team standings a year ago while the UD women were fourth. William & Mary won the men's team championship last year, snapping a 13-year reign by UNCW. The Towson women have won three straight titles and seven of the last eight.
