RALEIGH, N.C. – Tyra Reid (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) set a new personal record and finished first amongst collegiate competitors Friday as Delaware finished the first day of the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State at the Paul Derr Track Complex.
Reid shaved nearly two seconds off her previous career-best time with a performance of 54.77 in the 400m. The sophomore edged Dartmouth's Jennifer Meech's time of 54.79 and was second overall behind Yanique Haye-Smith, who was competing for G.W. Express/Nike.
Other UD competitors in the 400m included freshman Carly Pettipaw (Mt. Laurel, N.J/Lenape), junior Carolyn Darr (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley Area) and senior Michele Simmons (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional), who all also recorded personal-best times. Pettipew marked a time of 57.58, which was good for 33rd while Darr was 39th with at time of 58.15 and Simmons was 51st at 58.92.
Delaware also had a Top 10 finish with the 1,600 sprint medley relay. Juniors Paige Thompson-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evers Prep) and Leslie Ope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) joined freshmen Bema Kyeadea-Amponsah (Wilmington, Del./A.I. duPont) and Jeanette Bendolph (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) placed sixth for the Hens with a time of 4:07.08.
In the long jump, freshman Ashley Bailey (Middletown, Del./Middletown) finished 21st overall with a recorded distance of 5.12m (16-9 ¾).
“We had a good day today with some improvements from last weekend. Kudos to Tyra Reid, the star of the day with her lifetime best in the 400m dash. It was nice for us to compete against conference teams and top teams in the region. This was just the second meet in our outdoor season and I'm happy with the performances so far. I look forward to everyone continuing to put in solid efforts as we prepare for the CAA Championship in May.”
