Jim Sherman. “He's been our ace of the staff and he proved that again today. Diaz Nardo had a couple of big hits and our freshman first baseman Nick Patten showed his power with his blast to right center. It was a good day overall.”Marinaccio, a sophomore right-hander from Toms River, N.J. (Toms River North HS), was outstanding once again as he remained a perfect 3-0 on the season as he allowed only a fourth inning single and a fifth inning single. He struck out seven batters and walked just two in a 102-pitch effort as he lowered his ERA to a microscopic 1.00 on the season.
Hinton closed out the game for Delaware (5-3) as he preserved the lead and struck out four batters in two innings while allowing two runs and three hits.
Delaware got hits from six different batters led by 2015 Freshman All-American Nardo, who went 2 for 4 and recorded an RBI single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Hens a 4-0 lead.
After Nardo gave Delaware the 1-0 lead in first inning with his single, the Hens made it 2-0 on a run-scoring double to right center by designated hitter Doug Trimble. The Hens upped the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Patten drilled a one-out home run to right center, his second clout in the last three games.
UMass Lowell (3-3) split a pair of games on the day as the River Hawks opened the Hannah Invitational with a 3-0 win over Delaware State (0-10) Saturday. Andrew Ryan allowed just one hit and struck out 10 batters to earn the win for UML. Steve Passatempo aided the effort with a solo home run in the second inning.
Delaware will close out the tournament Sunday with an 11 a.m. game vs. UMass Lowell followed by a game against Delaware State at 2:30 p.m. Junior co-captain Burk FitzPatrick will take the mound for Delaware in the opener while freshman Brandon Walter will start the nightcap vs. DSU.
