3/5/2016 8:51:00 PM | Track & Field - Indoor
BOSTON -- Freshman pole vaulter Ashley Bailey recorded the best finish for the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon and set a school record in the process as the University of Delaware competed during the first day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.
Bailey, a first-year standout from Middletown, Del. (Middletown High School), placed seventh overall and first among all freshman with a leap of 12-feet, 7.5-inches to lead the Blue Hens and earn
All-East honors. Her height surpassed her previous high by two inches and broke the UD record of 12-6 set by Casey Bennett in 2005. Bailey's height was also only eight inches off Saturday's winning vault of 13-3.5 by Jaclyn Masters of Maine.
Bailey was one of seven Blue Hen athletes to compete on Saturday. Delaware will conclude action at the ECAC Championships on Sunday with senior Amira Idris competing in the triple jump at 9:30 a.m. and sophomore Sarah Hillman taking part in the shot put at 9:30 a.m.
Another Blue Hen freshman also put in a record-setting performance Saturday at Carly Pettipaw placed 12th in the preliminaries of the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.21.
Her time was not good enough to advance her to the finals, but it did break the Delaware record of 2:13.75 by Lindsay Prettyman in 2013. Pettipaw later joined the 4 x 400 meter relay team (at left) of Michele Simmons, junior Carolyn Darr, and sophomore Tyra Reid to place 13th with a time of 3:48.16.
Also for the Blue Hens on Saturday, Idris placed 13th in the long jump (18-2.5) and Reid finished 21st in the 200 meters (25.07) and 24th in the 400 meters (career-best 56.07). Junior Tyler Jackson also competed in the 200 meters but did not finish due to a lane violation.
