Delaware Women Dominate at Own Delaware Classic, Capture 16 Events, Sweep Relays

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field squad dominated its own Delaware Classic Track Meet Saturday at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium as the Blue Hens won 16 event titles, including sweeping the three relays, to capture the team title.
Delaware scored 397 points in a limited field that also included runner-up Holy Family and third place finisher West Liberty (W.Va.). The Delaware Track Club placed fourth.
The meet also included competitions on the men's collegiate side as well as high school boys and girls competition.
The Hens had three multiple winners led by junior Tyler Jackson who had four first place finishes. She won the 100 meters with a time of 12.24, captured the 200 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 24.54, teamed with Latazah Coleman, Michelle Simmons, and Jeanette Bendolph to win the 4 x 400 meter relay in 4:09.25, and teamed with Carlyn McGrath (at left/photo by Jeff Fannon), Paige Thompson-Charles, and Coleman to win the 4 x 100 meter relay in 48.29.
Coleman was in on two relay wins, McGrath also won the 100 meter hurdles (15.17) along with the 4 x 100 meter relay, and Liz McGroarty (at left/photo by Mark Campbell) won the 800 meters in 2:16.83 and teamed with Carly Pettipaw, Bendolph, and Lauren Zodl to win the 4 x 800 meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 9:15.26. It also was a stadium record as a first-time event.
In the field events, Sarah Hillman continued her strong spring by winning both the shot put (41-7.25) and discus (ECAC qualifying toss of 154-1) events, running her win total to six this spring.
Other Delaware winners were Tyra Reid (below right/photo by Mark Jordan) in the 400 meters (57.52), Emily Paolucci in the 1,500 meters (4:49.99), Madeline Berman in the 3,000 meters (11:17.11), Ashley Bailey in the pole vault with a UD freshman record tying leap of 12-0 (Jennifer Holly, 2009), Olivia Goncerz in the triple jump (36-8.25), Jade Francis in the hammer (149-3), and Kristen Valko in the javelin (120-1).
“I would like to thank everyone who supported our meet today,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith. “The day was a success thanks to our officials and coaches, but most importantly, our male and female alums who came back to help work the meet. This was the first official meet in our new throwing facility and the day was full of compliments on how beautiful our facilities look. Many thanks to Stuart & Suzanne Grant and to our administration and facilities staff who supported the many upgrades to our facilities. We look forward to hosting this event again next year.”
Delaware will continue action this week as several members of the team will be competing at the prestigious Penn Relays the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin FIeld in Philadelphia.
