Jim Sherman, whose squad won a CAA set for the first time since sweeping Hofstra back on Apr. 8-10. “To start the game, we didn't look so good giving up eight runs, but the guys never died. We got some critical at-bats and we got some great pitching. Conner Chasanov was the star of the game. He came in, got four strikeouts, and really settled us down. He gave us a chance to come back."Elon (24-25, 13-10 CAA) jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second inning and held a 10-4 advantage in the fourth before the Hens scored twice in the fourth inning and six times in the sixth to take a 12-10 lead. The Phoenix responded with two runs in the seventh to tie it, but the Hens answered with four runs in the seventh to re-take the lead for good.
Delaware right fielder Kyle Baker, second baseman Jeremy Ake (above left), and designated hitter Doug Trimble each knocked in three runs to lead the offensive explosion.
Chasanov entered the game with one out and two on in the fifth and UD trailing 10-6, but he struck out the final two batters to end the threat. He then set Elon down in the sixth, once again striking out the final two hitters. The Hens then exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to take their first lead.
Elon scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the second for the 8-1 lead before Delaware tallied three times in the second to cut the lead to 8-4 behind Trimble's RBI double and Baker's run-scoring single. Elon increased the lead to 10-4 with two runs in the fourth before the Hens got two more back thanks to two Elon errors and a two-run single by catcher Nick Tierno.
Delaware then exploded for six runs in the sixth as Baker and Jordan Glover each delivered RBI doubles, Ake knocked in a run with a single, and Trimble plated two more with another two-bagger. Elon tied things at 12-12 with two runs in the seventh off reliever Colman Vila, but Delaware answered with the pivotal four-run seventh.
Baker scored the eventual game-winner on a wild pitch and Ake added some insurance when he knocked in two runs with a misplayed triple. Elon rightfielder Nick Zammarelli lost Ake's high flyball in the sun and allowed the ball to drop at his side as two runs crossed the plate. Ake later scored on a wild pitch to cap the wild day of scoring.
Vila settled down and allowed just one hit over the final two innings to earn the win and improve to 2-1. He struck out Elon's Danny Lynch with runners on first and second to end the game.
Elon hit four home runs on the day, including a first baseman Tyler McVicar's three-run shot in the second and his two-run blast over the centerfield fence in the seventh. He finished the day 3 for 3 with three runs scored, seven RBI, and three walks. Kory Shumate and Brett Guba also homered for the Phoenix.
