Jim Sherman, who recruited and coached Kuhl at UD. “Chad has worked for this day since he first stepped into our program and then continued his progress in pro ball. I know he is excited. This is truly a dream come true for him. There was no doubt in my mind that he would make the big leagues someday. That day has finally arrived.”Kuhl, a ninth round pick by Pittsburgh in 2013, becomes the 12th former University of Delaware player to make it to the major leagues and first since Kevin Mench - another Delaware native who starred at St. Mark's High School before his All-American career at UD - played for the Washington Nationals in 2010. He will become the first former UD player to get a starting pitching nod in a MLB game since Dallas Green started a game for the Washington Senators in 1965.
Kuhl earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association and second team ABCA All-Region honors in 2013 after posting a 10-2 record and ranking third among Blue Hen starters with a 3.75 earned run average in 15 starts. He also led the team with 105.2 innings pitched and struck out 76 batters. His 10 wins ranked second in the CAA and were the most by a UD pitcher since 2001 when Vic Sage went 11-3 and Rich McGuire posted a 10-3 record.
As a sophomore in 2012, Kuhl went 5-5 with a 4.42 earned run average in 15 games with 13 starts. He struck out 64 batters in 77.1 innings pitched for a team that finished as runner-up at the CAA Tournament.
