Bob Shillinglaw, who coached both standout players. “Both started the season as teammates for the Denver Outlaws and both coach together at Valor Christian Academy in Denver where Junior (Grant) is head coach. The exciting part will be to see how Junior does against his former team who traded him at midseason.”
Grant, one of the greatest players in the history of college and professional lacrosse, scored 10 goals against the New York Lizards in the final regular season game of the season and keyed the Machine's 16-10 win over the Charlotte Hounds in the semifinals last weekend with a six-goal effort.
Grant was traded by the Outlaws to the Machine at mid-season, setting up an interesting battle in the title game. A two-time All-American for Delaware in 1998-99 and a 25-year professional, the 41-year-old Grant is a two-time MLL Most Valuable Player and the owner of over 300 career regular season goals. He has been a part of five MLL championship teams.
Kormondy, a native of Colorado who will be competing in his first MLL Championship game as a rookie, has notched four goals in a backup role at the midfield position. The Outlaws advanced to the title game thanks to a 20-17 victory over the Lizards.
“I want this bad for myself, but I want it worse for these young guys who have yet to taste a championship,” Grant told Inside Lacrosse this past week. “I'm hopeful I can share a victory with those guys. I love having the ability to help these guys realize their dreams.”
