LEWISBURG, Pa. – It was a scoreless game through the first 73-plus minutes of action before Delaware turned on the heat and picked up the 3-0 season-opening victory over Bucknell at Emmitt Field.
Senior All-American Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) had a touch on each of the night's scores as he finished the game by tying a career-high with five points on two goals and an assist.
Classmate Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) collected three points with a goal and assist.
Fellow senior Marco Siverio (El Rosario, Spain/Colegio Hispano Británico) added his third career assist while sophomore John Schroeder (Houston, Texas/YSC Academy) notched his first career assist.
Laguna put the Hens (1-0) on board first in the 74th minute off a pass from Delgado. Just three minutes later, UD took the 2-0 advantage as Schroeder crossed it in to Delgado, who headed it into the net.
Delgado registered the third and final goal in the 87th minute with assists coming from Laguna and Siverio.
Redshirt sophomore Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) notched four saves for the Hens.
Freshman Nick King posted a team-best three shots for the Bison (0-1) while classmate Tyler Marchiano recorded four saves in the loss.
“In the end, I felt the score was a little flattering as this victory didn't come easy for us. Bucknell was better in the first half and we had to be patient in finding the game. It's always nice to have a striker like Guillermo [Delgado] to get things going. He gave us a good foundation to get the win before another tough game this Sunday against Fordham.”
