NEWARK, Del. – On an unseasonably warm and sunny Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts, East Carolina came out on top by a score of 7-0 over Delaware.
The Pirates (9-1) came out of the gates and immediately swept the team doubles point.
In top flight singles, freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) and Freddie McGeehan battled its out until the very end before McGeehan pulled out the 7-6 (3), 6-3 win. The match was the first in the top spot for Lankes this season.
Sophomore Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) also held a close one in No. 2 singles, but eventually faltered to Ronny Georgi, 6-4, 6-2.
In the fifth slot, senior co-captain Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) nearly forced a third set, but James Ling collected the 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory.
“East Carolina is a better team than we are right now. In doubles, we were a couple of points away from making it very interesting, but they were more aggressive than us on the big points. In singles, we could have been a little bit more patient and extended the rallies longer than we did.”
