NEW YORK -- The longest standing record in University of Delaware women's indoor track & field history fell Friday night as the distance medley relay team placed second overall during the opening night of the Armory Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory.
Delaware's foursome of sophomore Carly Pettipaw, junior Tyra Reid, sophomore Jeanette Bendolph, and Liz McGroarty teamed up for a time of 11:43.49 to post a second place finish behind the University of Wisconsin (11:31.82) and shatter the school record set way back in 1980.
“I am very proud of these ladies,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith. “They represented the team well. Records are made to be broken. It is always nice to see another record shattered.”
The Blue Hens did just that as their time of broke the mark of 11:46.1 by Maro Bchakjian, Jennifer Mills, Mary Schilly-Knisely, and Rachel Davis in 1980 by nearly three full seconds. The time also met the ECAC meet qualifying standard.
Delaware, currently in 11th place in the team standings, competed in six events on the first day of the meet on Friday and will return to action Saturday for more action. Members of the Delaware team will also be competing at the Frank Coldren Invitational at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. on Saturday as part of a split-squad competition.
In addition to the record-setting DMR, Delaware also had six other top 40 finishes in the star-studded field as junior Sarah Hillman was eighth in the shot put (47-5.25) to finish first among UD field athletes; junior London Freeland was 20th in the 400 meters (58.26); senior Jade Francis was 21st in the shot put (41-1.5); senior Leslie Ope was 30th in the 60 meter hurdles (8.99); senior Betsy Erlanger was 31st in the 1,000 meters (3:00.56); and senior Carolyn Darr was 34th in the 400 meters (59.08).
