COLUMBIA, S.C. – Delaware men's tennis came up with a huge victory Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens routed Benedict College, 8-1, at the Columbia Tennis Center.
UD came out of the gates strong and swept doubles action for the second time this season.
Sophomores Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster County Day School) and Venkatesh Ramkumar (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) opened the day with the 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles while senior Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) and freshman Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) followed with the 8-4 decision in the third slot.
In top flight play, junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) and senior Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) paired for the 8-6 victory.
Cheng continued the winning ways to kick off singles action as he cruised to the 6-1, 6-0 decision over Malek Selmen in the sixth spot for his fourth straight win of the year.
Flematti and Casselbury, the team's co-captains, also garnered victories as Flematti topped Armando Flores, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 3 singles and Casselbury posted the 6-3, 6-3 win over Quentin Eloise in the second flight.
In the top spot, Wong collected his team-leading 13th victory of the season with the 6-4, 6-2 win against Nathaniel Pinkney.
Marcano wrapped up play in the fifth slot by defeating Juan Hernandez, 7-5, 6-0.
“This was a good win today against a tough Division II opponent that won their conference last season. We came out strong in the doubles and then followed up with hard work in singles. This is a good confidence booster as we continue our spring break schedule.”
