CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Blue Hens split action Sunday as Delaware opened the day with a 4-0 loss at South Carolina State before wrapping the evening by defeating The Citadel, 4-3.
After being swept by the Bulldogs (8-7) earlier in the day at Hardeep Judge Tennis Center, the Hens (6-9) bounced back by edging the Bulldogs at the Earle Tennis Center.
In doubles play against The Citadel, sophomore co-captain Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster County Day School) paired with freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) for the 6-2 decision over Noah Nawabi and Willem van Zyl in the second slot.
Delaware clinched the team point in No. 1 doubles as junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) and senior co-captain Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) downed Michael Anzalone and Matthew Henson, 7-6 (5).
The Bulldogs collected the first two singles wins before Flematti picked up the 6-4, 6-3 decision over van Zyl in the fourth spot to tie the match at 2-2.
The Citadel responded with another singles victory while the Hens posted back-to-back wins to top the Bulldogs.
Wong defeated Henson, 6-4, 7-5, in No. 2 singles before freshman Dominick Perez (Bethesda, Md./Gonzaga College) captured the 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-5 win over Isaac Stolar to give Delaware its sixth victory of the year.
[vs. South Carolina State]: “We played well throughout the entirety of the match. In doubles play, SCSU was very solid at the net and returned the ball a little better than we did. In singles, we were right there with them in every match.”
[vs. The Citadel]: “This was a nice win for the program tonight. We played great in doubles and played with great confidence throughout. In singles play we showed incredible resiliency battling on every court. We are looking mentally and physically stronger with each match and I'm so proud of these guys for competing with integrity.”
