NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens returned to the win column Saturday afternoon with their 6-1 triumph over Hofstra at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
Delaware (9-6, 2-2 CAA) came out of the gates firing immediately swept the team doubles point.
In top-flight doubles play, graduate student Denny LaMachia (at left; Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and junior Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) cruised to the 6-1 victory while sophomores Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) and Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) clinched the match with a 6-3 No. 2 win.
Freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and junior Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) wrapped doubles action with a 7-6 victory in the third slot.
The Blue Hens continued to roll in singles action as Pilkington picked up the 6-1, 6-1 top-flight win over Jasmine King.
Komer followed with the 6-1, 6-0 victory versus Sarah Herndon while LaMachia clinched the match with her 6-4, 6-4 decision over Michal Kaplan.
In No. 4 singles, sophomore Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) notched the 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 win against Carmen Pestano.
Studnicki concluded the day by defeating Giulia Leon, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Prior to the day's match, the Hens honored LaMachia as part of senior day festivities.
“We played very well today, especially considering we returned from a nine-day road trip that included four tough matches. We have gained incredible match experience and today was a testament to our mental stamina.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· With 21 singles victories, Brooke Pilkington is now tied for fifth in Delaware single season history for wins by a freshman.
· Denny LaMachia and Amanda Studnicki moved into ninth all-time in Delaware doubles career history with 23 wins as a duo.
