NEWARK, Del. – It came down to the very last set once again as Delaware picked up the 4-3 victory against CAA foe Towson Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
Down 3-2, the Blue Hens pulled out three-set wins in the first and fourth flights to move to 10-6 on the year and 3-2 in conference play while the Tigers fall to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the CAA.
First, freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) defeated Nicole Shakhnazarova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in No. 1 singles before sophomore Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) provided the heroics with her 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Barbora Vasilkova in the No. 4 spot.
Sophomore Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also collected her 19th win of the season with the 6-3, 6-4 second flight victory against Lucy Williams.
The Hens opened the match by capturing the team doubles point with triumphs in the second and third flights.
Komer paired with classmate Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) for their second straight No. 2 doubles victory before Pilkington and junior Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) posted the clincher in the third flight.
“You have to credit Towson for an incredibly close match. We seem to be the David Copperfield of women's tennis. Once again, the score was tied at 3-3 with the deciding match extending into a third set. Annie showed outstanding tenacity to close out her match to secure the win.”
