PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – In the final doubleheader of the season, Delaware split contests by falling at Temple, 5-0, Thursday morning before following with a 9-0 triumph at West Chester in the afternoon.
In afternoon play at WCU, the Blue Hens collected doubles wins in the first and second flights.
Senior Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) first paired with junior Asdrubal Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) to pick up the 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles. Fellow senior Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) picked up the 8-2 top-flight victory.
In singles play, Cheng cruised to the 6-0, 6-0 triumph in the second flight while Asdrubal Marcano posted the same score in the third spot.
Sophomore Venkatesh Ramkumar (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) collected the 6-1, 6-1 decision in the fourth flight while freshman Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) notched the 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 win in No. 1 singles.
The Blue Hens (9-16) recorded wins by default in No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and No. 6 singles against the Rams (1-13).
[vs. Temple]: “I was pleased with our performance today. In doubles, we were right there with them until the end. I thought we served well, returned well and stayed aggressive at the net. In singles, they got off to a quick start, but we immediately bounced back in the second set in most of the matches. Temple has a very strong program and my hat goes off to them for playing excellent tennis today.
[vs. West Chester]: “We bounced back in our second match and played doubles with very high intensity. We overpowered them in our doubles and took a quick weave on all courts. In singles play we were definitely more confident and played a match on our terms.”
