Welcome to the sixth installment of This is How I Train.
Every Tuesday and Thursday during the preseason, we will feature a member of the Blue Hen football team and learn a little more about what motivates them to excel.
Today we meet Jake Trump, a senior offensive tackle and a key member of an experienced front that looks to lead the way in 2017.
JAKE TRUMP
Senior • Offensive Tackle • Mechanicsburg, Pa. • Mechanicsburg HS • Management Information Systems Major
Impressive Goals Ahead: "First of all, our biggest goal is to make the (NCAA) playoffs and win the CAA championships. Individually, I just want to be a leader on this team. It's my fifth year so there are a lot of eyes looking up to me and I just want to be there to be a good teammate and help them be the best they can be."
Close Knit Group: "I think we (offensive line unit) are the closest we've been since I've been here at Delaware. Having a cohesive line is extremely important. We have so much depth and our second string guys at almost every position are almost as good as the first string guys. There is a lot of competition and it's a great big group."
Big Guys Going Bowling: "We go bowling every year, take the freshmen, and have a great time. It's a big group thing we like to do. We went bowling last Sunday and had a lot of fun. Steve Robinson (despite playing on one leg due to a recent injury) and Jethro (Pepe) are pretty good. I am probably towards the middle of the group. A lot of us bowl in the mid to high 100's."
Kudos to Coach McCorkle: "(Offensive line) Coach (Blaine) McCorkle has been great. He came here and fit in right away and we had a really short adjustment period. He is super friendly and super encouraging and is always positive. All the guys really like him. Immediately from the time he got here and took over, the adjustment was almost seamless."
A Year from Now.....: "A lot depends on how the season goes, but most likely, realistically I will have a job in software engineering or information systems. That's what I really want to do."
Computers and Stuff: "I came in and didn't want to take mechanical engineering so I took a couple of computer science classes and then moved to the business school and took a couple of MIS (Management Information Systems) classes and really liked those. I've taken a bunch more computer science courses to get a computer science minor. I love all the algorithms and the coding and you get to build things on the computer, making it functional, and seeing it work."
Tough Classes: "I have a professional concentration in economics. The most intense class I took was Econ 301 - Quantitative Microeconomic Theory. It was calculus based, and I was used to all the MIS and computer science stuff, so diving into microeconomics was tough. The tests were on Fridays and they just happened to fall on all the weeks we traveled (for road games). I was studying the whole bus ride home on Saturday nights and then took the tests on Sunday."
Shout Out to Dr. (Mark) Serva: "Dr. Serva is definitely my favorite professor. He has one of the most fun and interactive classes I've ever taken. A lot of times it's about solving a problem and if you need help he is there for you. And he gives really great help. But he also gives you space to figure things out on your own and lets you learn in your own way. He is always available to help you and many times I've just dropped by to talk about different things about class and computer science."
