NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team dropped its season opener Saturday, falling to Georgetown University 186-114 at Rawstrom Natatorium.
Junior Athena Cimino starred in her Delaware debut, as the Georgia Southern transfer took home two individual titles, a relay title and swam for the 200-yard IM relay team (1:48.89) that finished second. Cimino placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.72) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.45). The freshman concluded action when she swam the anchor leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.31) as Delaware finished first.
Junior Mina Feyrer also swam well, as the Whitehall, Pa. native finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.45) and second in the 100-yard butterfly (59.11).
Delaware returns to action Saturday, Oct. 14 against George Mason at 1 p.m.
John Hayman“We had some great swims for our opening meet, but it was a tough loss. This is the earliest we have ever competed, and we have a large freshman class, so it will take some time to develop their speed. Georgetown had a good meet and their depth in diving certainly hurt us. Our teams had many highlights today on the men's distance and breast events and the women's sprints. We will be working hard these next two weeks to get ready for when we host George Mason.”
