NEWARK, Del. – William & Mary forward Antonio Bustamante scored with just 2:16 remaining in regulation as the Tribe defeated Delaware, 1-0, Saturday night at Grant Stadium.
William & Mary improved to 3-7-2 overall with the win, including 1-2-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens dropped to 4-9 this season, but remained in fourth place in the conference table with a 3-3 mark for nine points.
In the 88th minute Bustamante took a pass from Ryder Bell and fired a shot from 18 yards out on the right side into the lower left corner of the net for the game's only goal.
The Blue Hens had a chance to equalize in the final seconds, but Soren Frost's rocket from 25 yards out was tipped over the net by Tribe goalkeeper Sam Onyeador.
Delaware had a few excellent opportunities earlier in the contest, including a header by Fede Prieto in the first half and a shot from close range by Jake Steinberg in the second, but could not push across a goal.
The Blue Hens held a slim 8-6 advantage in shots, while William & Mary took six of the 11 corner kicks on the night.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Tonight we had a great opportunity if we had gotten a result, a tie would have put us in (the CAA Tournament). I thought we did enough to get that, but credit William & Mary. This was a must-win game for them and they got it done. We had some good opportunities, I thought the soccer was good. We had a great crowd, it would have been nice to give the alumni a win on a special night, and I think the lads will be disappointed in the dressing room that we went out in the fashion that we did tonight."
