RICHMOND, Va. – All week long, the University of Delaware football program preached about taking the ball away from their opponents.
Mission Accomplished.
The Blue Hens forced six turnovers to spark a 43-28 win over the University of Richmond on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. The victory gives Head Coach Danny Rocco his 100thcareer victory.
Junior Pat Kehoe threw for 291 yards on 11-of-20 passing with two TDs, while senior Joe Walker had his second career 100-yard receiving game, finishing with 113 on the day.
Senior Kani Kane rushed for two scores, while classmates Vinny Papale and Charles Scarff both caught TD passes on the afternoon.
Defensively, Nasir Adderley had two interceptions to lead a swarming defensive unit, which include a fumble return for a TD by sophomore Colby Reeder in the first quarter of the contest.
The Blue Hens jumped all over the Spiders to start the contest, forcing a safety on a punt return, followed by a four-play, 59-yard TD drive, followed on the ensuing play by Reeder's TD return to quickly jump out 16-0 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.
Richmond would answer with a score and a field goal, but a 58-yard TD connection between Papale and Kehoe would send Delaware into halftime with a comfortable 33-10 cushion.
The lead would balloon to 43-10 with another Kane TD with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter.
Richmond would score twice in the fourth quarter, but interceptions by Adderley and Ray Jones in the final 10 minutes of the contest helped seal the victory.
Quotable
"I'm incredibly proud of my team for how they fought today and had my back," Rocco said. "We talked all week about taking the ball away and we were able to do just that. We did a lot of good things today offensively and some good things defensively, but this is just a stepping stone for us. We have to keep on getting better each week."
