RICHMOND, Va.—The baseball program of the University of Delaware was picked second in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Preseason Poll and placed four players on the Preseason All-CAA Team, the league announced Thursday.
Junior Nick Patten (Butler, Pa./IMG Academy) and senior captain Calvin Scott (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) were selected to the First-Team, while junior Kevin Mohollen (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath-Haven) and Diaz Nardo (Harbeson, Del./ Cape Henlopen) were named honorable mention selections.
“The recognition of all of our all-conference selections are well deserved,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “Today was an outstanding showing by our coaches in the conference and says a lot about what they think about our program. Coming off the first CAA Championship in program history, we're excited to see what this years group can accomplish. We return a good core of guys from last season's team and that should serve us well in what will be another tough year in the CAA.”
In the poll, the Blue Hens received 51 total points and three first-place votes, falling 11 points behind preseason favorite UNCW (62 total points, six first-place votes). Charleston (47 points) was projected third, with 2017 regular season champions Northeastern (43 points) projected fourth. Elon and William & Mary (37 points) were tied for fifth, followed by James Madison (23 points), Hofstra (13 points) and Towson (11 points).
A CAA first team selection a season ago, Patten batted .312 with 14 home runs and 54 RBI and was named an ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region selection. The junior led the Hens in on-base percentage (.446), total bases (119) and runs scored (58). Patten batted .322 in conference play.
A third team All-CAA selection last season, Scott batted .332 with three home runs and 41 runs batted in. The senior captain hit .348 in CAA play last year with eight doubles and 17 RBI.
One of the top leadoff hitters in the conference, Mohollen batted .307 with 13 doubles, five triples
A mainstay at the hot corner for the Blue Hens, Nardo batted .259 a season ago hitting a team-best 16 doubles. The senior captain compiled 22 extra-base hits and drove in 38 runs.
