NEWARK, Del. – While the University of Delaware student-athletes have been winning championships on the field, they've also been achieving excellence in the classroom.
During the recent fall semester, 600-plus Blue Hen student-athletes posted a combined grade point average of 3.102, the second-highest mark in program history and the eighth-straight semester that a 3.0 mark has been surpassed. It also marked the third-straight semester above a 3.1.
Of the 21 programs, 16 of them had a team cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
“We are extremely fortunate to have so many talented young men and women representing the University of Delaware both on the playing fields and in the classroom,” Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak said. “As ambassadors for this great University, we are so proud of our student-athletes for their continued dedication and commitment in the classroom and in the community and really take on leadership roles.”
Women's soccer led the way with a team mark of 3.528, followed closely by field hockey and cross country, who both earned a 3.482 this past fall. On the men's side, soccer took the top spot with a 3.212 team GPA, followed by golf (3.062) and swimming (3.015).
“It's great to see the continued success of our student-athletes in the classroom,” said University of Delaware Director of Student Services for Athletes Tim Morrissey, now in his 25th year leading the unit. “I think it really speaks to the quality of the collaboration between our coaches, academic support staff, and primarily our student-athletes who put in all of the hard work to earn these grades. It's always wonderful to see when our achievements mirror the values of the Athletic department and the University of Delaware as a whole.”
A total of 230 student-athletes, roughly 40 percent of Delaware's total, earned Dean's List honors, the third-highest total in program history. An impressive 30 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 for the fall semester.
