NEWARK, Del. – Being a member of the University of Delaware lacrosse program is much more than just striving for excellence on the field and in the classroom.
A critical part of being a Blue Hen is being a part of the community and that's exactly what junior Kevin Sheahen was honored for recently, being recognized as one of six volunteers with Jefferson Award for Community Service by Newark Mayor Polly Sierer.
“Community service to me is a huge part of who I am and what I believe in. I was very fortunate to grow up in Dover, Del., and be a part of a community that gave so much and helped me grow as an individual,” Sheahan wrote in his personal statement. “Being fortunate enough to have the platform as a varsity athlete at the University of Delaware has made me realize how great of an impact I can have within the local community.”
Sheahan is a junior business management major at the University of Delaware who aspires to continue his professional work in athletics. He is a member of the men's lacrosse team and serves as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He participates in a variety of charitable efforts, including visiting sick children at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children and raising money for organizations like the B+ Foundation and the HEADstrong Foundation.
The Jefferson Awards Foundation was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard. It's goal is to identify and honor local unsung heroes and celebrate their outstanding community service.
