Whether a skater hopes to achieve Olympic dreams or enjoy the recreational benefits of skating, the University of Delaware Learn to Skate Program at UD is a great place to start!
Lessons are available year-round, and are categorized into sections: Fall I, Fall II, Winter I, Winter II, Spring and Summer. Class size is limited. We keep classes smaller for all Snowplow Sam levels to give instructors the ability to provide more individual attention and hands on instruction. All classes are held in the Fred Rust Ice Arena.
Evaluations will be done on the 5th week of every series. Skaters will receive an evaluation slip on the last day of the series, indicating which skills have been successfully completed and which need improvement. Once all skills are completed for a given level, the skater will receive a certificate and will move up to a new level.
The Beginner Learn To Skate Classes teach new skaters the basics of figure skating, helping skaters to build a strong foundation in which to continue mastering the sport of figure skating.
Each Free Skate Level is divided into four sections: moves in the field, spins, dance/footwork sequences and jumps. The Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters strong foundation on which to build their skills. This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating.
Skating has always been a sport of athleticism, mixed with grace. While learning the technical side on the ice, every good skater takes part in a ballet program. We are excited to offer a ballet class geared to skaters of all ages, at the alpha level and up.
