Blue Hens Head to Saint Joseph's for Tuesday Afternoon Game

THE WEEK THAT WAS: Delaware will look to snap a three-game losing streak Tuesday and is coming off a 2-3 week. On Tuesday, senior Nick Spadafino turned in his strongest start of the season, pitching seven innings allowing just one unearned run and five hits. The Dover native struck out five batters. Nick Patten (sixth inning single), Kyle Baker (13th inning triple) and Diaz Nardo (13th inning double) each drove in a run for the Blue Hens who received six shutout innings from Clay Conaway (2.2 IP) and Colman Vila (3.1 IP) who earned his fourth victory of the season. On Wednesday, the Blue Hens again received a strong start as freshman Winston Allen threw five shutout innings to earn his first career victory. Erik Bowren broke a scoreless tie in the third, hitting his first career Blue Hens home run over the 'Blue Monster' in LF. Baker added a crucial insurance run with a solo homer in the eighth inning. Freshman Joey Haass threw a scoreless sixth inning, while Matt Hornich threw two scoreless to earn his first save in over a year. This past weekend the Blue Hens were swept at The College of Charleston. In Friday's 5-3 loss Delaware received a three-run home run from Nick Patten. Junior Kyle Hinton pitched 5.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned). Saturday, Delaware fell 11-2 despite Jordan Hutchins hitting his first career home run. Freshman Billy Sullivan IV allowed a career-high seven runs in the loss. Sunday, Delaware fell 3-2 in 11 innings despite another strong start from Chris Ludman. One pitch away from firing six shutout innings, Ludman allowed just a two-out double striking out six batters. Vila pitched another 3.2 innings running his scoreless innings streak to 13.2 innings. Mohollen scored another two runs bringing his season total to 36.
MIDWEEK MANIA: The Blue Hens are currently 7-0 in mid-week afternoon contests this season. The Hens went 4-4 a season ago in mid-week games. Delaware defeated Maryland 7-1 back on 3/8 and completed the series sweep with a 7-6 victory on 3/13. The Hens earned their third-midweek victory of the season at La Salle and the fourth-midweek victory at Lehigh. Delaware's fifth victory in the mid-week was an 8-5 victory over Saint Joseph's. Last week the Blue Hens earned victories six and seven.
BEHIND ENEMY LINES: The Hawk enter Tuesday's mid-week game with a record of 16-23. This past weekend the Hawks were swept by A-10 foe Fordham. Last time these two teams met Brian Markoski went 4-5 with a triple and two RBI. In that game, Haass pitched four innings allowing just an unearned run. Spadafino pitched a scoreless eighth inning in that game. Charlie Concannon continues to lead Saint Joseph's in average (.336), hits (49) and doubles (10). His four homers and 22 RBI are the second most on the team.
