Blue Hens Drop Hard Fought 2-1 Decision To Northeastern
9/20/2018 10:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – Headed into CAA play, Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro talked about how much resilience he had seen from his University of Delaware women's soccer team in recent weeks.
That was once again on display on Thursday night in the conference opener against a tough Northeastern squad. The Blue Hens tested the Huskies down to the final minute, but a late penalty kick gave Northeastern the 2-1 victory on a beautiful night at Grant Stadium.
Nearly the entire first half was spent in the middle of the field with the teams battling for possession and neither team allowing many chances at the net.
Northeastern would finally break through with less than a minute left in the half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
Delaware would show that resilience in the second half, turning a midfield turnover into a scoring opportunity when Sara D'Appolonia streaked down the midfield, found Riley Dixon on the left side. Dixon lofted a pass into the box, where it was deflected right onto the foot of Dani Kabat.
Kabat blasted her second goal of the year into the top of the goal to tie the game up in the 51stminute.
Once again, the game would turn into a possession battle with junior Cali Loeffler making several big saves to keep the game tied up.
The Huskies would find the difference maker when they drew a penalty kick in the 64thminute and converted to take the 2-1 lead.
Delaware would pressure the Huskies offense for much of the final 20 minutes, but Northeastern was able to knock away several opportunities and hold on for the 2-1 victory.
