Blue Hens Battle, But Fall To Charleston, 1-0 on Senior Day

NEWARK, Del. – One thing is for sure. No one can ever question the fight and heart of the University of Delaware women's soccer program.
For the fifth straight game, the Blue Hens found themselves in a one-goal battle and for a second consecutive game Delaware owned the second half, but came up just short in a tough 1-0 loss to CAA foe Charleston on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Grant Stadium.
Prior to the match, Delaware honored its two seniors, Riley Curtin and Sofia Munn, who have been an integral part of the program over the past four years.
The Blue Hens owned the second half of the contest, outshooting the Cougars, 11-4. Down to 16 healthy field players, Delaware has outshot its opposition 18-9 in the second half of the past two games.
Both teams traded possession back and forth for much of the first half before Charleston found its lone goal of the game in the 31stminute when a free kick landed on the head of a diving Cougar to take a 1-0 lead.
Coming out of the half, the Blue Hens jumped all over Charleston, pressuring them deep into Cougar territory. In the 62ndminute, Riley Dixon took a pass and dribbled through defenders to get into the top of the box, but a diving tackle knocked the shot away.
Delaware's best chance came about 10 minutes later when Arna Arnthorsdottir blasted a shot from 25 yards out, but a diving save into the bottom right corner by the Cougar goalie kept things scoreless.
The Blue Hens would continue to own the second half possession, but Charleston's defense came up with the stops to come away with the 1-0 victory.

"It's tough to put into words how proud I am of this team's character. We have some incredible people in this program and that's showing through on the field right now. As a coach, all you want is for your student-athletes to be able to play as hard and as well as they are as people and that's exactly what these girls are doing right now." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
