Blue Hens Drop 2-0 Decision To Penn at Navy Invitational
9/7/2018 7:14:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A quick goal proved to be too much momentum as the University of Delaware women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Penn in the opener of Navy Invitational.
Penn came out aggressive, earning three corner kicks in the first five minutes of the contest. The last of those three resulted in a goal directly off the corner as Sasha Stephens curved in her shot into the upper 90 to make it 1-0 less than five minutes into the contest.
The Quakers would continue their momentum, peppering the Blue Hen goal with six more shots in over the next 15 minutes.
Penn would add to their lead in the 28thminute to push it to 2-0.
It would remain that way into the second half when the Blue Hens came out alive, with senior Riley Dixon testing the Quakers in the first two minutes, forcing a diving save from Penn's keeper.
Dani Kabat would nearly get Delaware on the board in the 69thminute, but her attempt was knocked away as the Quakers were able to preserve the 2-0 shutout.
Quotable
"As a young group, we are continuing to learn harsh lessons about what we need to be in order to be competitive. Today was a tale of two halves. When we found the right mindset in the second half, we were improved and even dangerous. Unfortunately, we didn't start that way. We'll need to learn from instances like this and be better moving forward." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
