QUEENS, N.Y. – The theme of this week's University of Delaware women's soccer practices was to let no one out work the Blue Hens. Leave it all on the pitch, every single time.
That's exactly what the Blue Hens did on Friday night against Big East foe St. John's, battling the Red Storm to the wire, but coming up just short in a 3-2 contest. It was Delaware's non-conference finale.
Delaware came out firing, earning a corner kick less than a minute into the contest. However, SJU would respond back and get the game's first goal in the ninth minute.
That Blue Hen work ethic would continue to show up as Delaware got even as Damali Simon-Ponte found Riley Dixon in the 31stminute, who fired home her first goal of the season.
Arna Arnthorsdottir nearly gave Delaware the lead heading into halftime, forcing SJU's keeper to make a diving save the in final minutes of the first half.
Much like the first half, SJU would get an early goal in the second half to retake the lead at 2-1.
And yet again, the Blue Hens would answer with a goal in the 61stminute, this time it was Simon-Ponte, who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Freshman keeper Kamryn Stablein would help keep Delaware in the game, making save after save in the second half to preserve the 2-2 tie.
The Red Storm would finally break through, getting a long pass that led to a breakaway for SJU's leading scorer, which would result in the eventual game-winner and a SJU 3-2 lead.
Delaware would continue to fight and nearly tied the game in the final minute, but a diving stop by SJU's keeper on a shot by Riley Dixon locked up the win for the Red Storm.
Quotable
"This was a hard fought game against a very motivated and very talented St. John's team. So much credit to them. I thought over the course of the night we did well to limit their truly dangerous chances, but they were certainly efficient in the ones they had. Our kids showed great resolve coming from behind twice. I'm proud of that type of character trait and I'm excited to now put our full focus inot CAA play." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
