ELON, N.C. – Elon forward Tyler Seibring hit a foul line jumper with 1.6 seconds remaining as the Phoenix edged Delaware, 57-56, Thursday night at the Schar Center.
The Blue Hens (14-9, 6-4 CAA) had regained the lead with 2:30 left when Ithiel Horton converted a fastbreak layup, but then had three straight empty possessions after the Phoenix (8-15, 4-6 CAA) were held scoreless on the other end. Following a missed jumper by Darian Bryant, Seibring grabbed the rebound and Elon called timeout with 9 seconds to play. After two UD players collided near the foul line on the inbounds pass, Seibring hit a jumper and, following a UD timeout, the Blue Hens could not get off a final shot.
Eric Carter paced Delaware with team-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds to post his 11th double-double of the season, while Ryan Allen was the other Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points. Horton chipped in nine points while Matt Veretto contributed seven, Bryant added six and Kevin Anderson scored five.
Seibring finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for Elon, while Kris Wooten scored a season-high 16 points.
Both teams struggled shooting for most of the night, with the Phoenix hitting just 40.4 percent from the field while Delaware shot only 38.3 percent. Elon connected on only 8 of 28 three-point attempts, while the Blue Hens were 5 of 20 from behind the arc.
After Carter opened the scoring with a short jumper, Elon answered with the next 11 points and led the rest of the half. The Phoenix were still up 19-12 midway through the period, but Delaware eventually cut the margin to 31-30 at the break when Horton beat the buzzer with a tough layup in transition.
Neither team led by four than four points in a tight second half that featured eight lead changes.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"This is a disappointing loss. It was a back and forth game, we just didn't make enough tough plays down the stretch. Tip your hat to (Tyler) Seibring, he's the one guy you don't want taking that last shot. We did a good job of battling and guarding defensively, but missed too many shots that could have extended the lead. I thought we had good looks, but settled for too many jumpers and just didn't have enough firepower offensively."
Game Notes
• Delaware played its third straight one-point game
• Eric Carter moved into 18th place in UD history with 973 career points
• Ryan Allen reached double figures for the ninth consecutive game
• Carter has led UD in rebounds in 20 straight contests
• Delaware fell to 0-5 in Elon since the Phoenix joined the CAA
• The Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Hens
