NEWARK, Del. – For anyone who watched Sunday's soccer match at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, one thing was clear. It was championship level soccer.
Two of the top teams in the current CAA standings put their best foot forward with the University of Delaware women's soccer team taking two-time defending champion to the wire, but ultimately, the Pride of Hofstra made the final play and took home a 3-2 victory.
Sophomore Sara D'Appolonia had a goal and an assist on the day, while junior Riley Dixon tallied assists on both Blue Hen goals. Senior Jill Vassallo scored her first goal of the season in the contest.
Delaware has now played in one-goal contests in 12 of 15 games this fall, including 11 straight games dating back to September 1.
Hofstra struck first in the first 10 minutes of the contest, but a great sequence starting with a long outlet from junior Gabby Johnson to Dixon, who then fed a beautiful cross into the box for an in-stride D'Appolonia, who evened the game up in the 18th minute.
Delaware would put the pressure on the Pride in the second half, when again, Dixon would get a chance started, feeding D'Appolonia in the box, who sent a quick pass to Vassallo, who deposited a shot into the lower right side of the goal for a 2-1 lead.
Hofstra would score 12 minutes later and the two teams looked headed for extra time, until the Pride got a bounce in the box and finished a chance in the final three minutes of the game to take home the 3-2 victory.
What They Said
"Hats off to Hofstra. They are a well-coached, very disciplined team that is clinical around the box. I felt like we did well to limit their chances, but they certainly made the most of what they got. That said, I'm so proud of our girls. We went toe to toe with a seasoned championship caliber opponent and proved that we deserve to be regarded as one of the top teams in this league. We'll keep our heads up and look forward to our next chance to compete together!" – head coach Mike Barroqueiro
