TOWSON, Md. – If you've been following the University of Delaware women's soccer program this fall, chances are you probably don't have many finger nails left.
A rainy afternoon in Towson proved no different as the Blue Hens found themselves yet again in overtime, this time it was sophomore Sara D'Appolonia who scored her second game-winner in the past three games to give Delaware a 1-0 victory in double overtime.
The win clinched a second consecutive CAA Tournament berth for the Blue Hens, marking the first time in six years that Delaware has reached the postseason in back-to-back seasons.
The five CAA wins and 10 overall victories are the highest total since the 2011 season.
D'Appolonia has now scored in three consecutive games and leads the team with five goals on the year.
Defensively, the Blue Hens limited the Tigers to just two shots on goal for the game and picked up the eighth shutout of the season, the most in a single-season since 2009 and fourth most in program history. Delaware has now allowed one or fewer goals in 17 of its past 21 games dating back til the end of the 2018 campaign.
What They Said
"I'm obviously glad to get the result on the road. Although it's a short trip, Towson is always a difficult place to play and then having to deal with the weather added another layer of intrigue. That being said, I give Towson a lot of credit, they were able to get us out of our rhythm in the second half and forced us to adjust. Once we did, I thought we were able to get a hold of the game again and that swing in momentum is what ultimately led to the goal. We definitely have plenty to address before Thursday's match against a great Elon team." – head coach Mike Barroqueiro
