RICHMOND, Va. – The 2019 season has been a historic one for the University of Delaware women's soccer program. The most wins in 25 years. The second most shutouts (9) ever. The most overtime wins ever. The highest CAA finish ever.
The trend continued on Thursday as the Blue Hens received the most All-CAA awards in program history with six student-athletes being recognized. Junior Olivia Schuck became the first player in program history to earn a major conference award, being named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year.
Joining Schuck on the All-CAA First Team was sophomore forward Sara D'Appolonia, who scored a team-high six goals for the Blue Hens. Senior captain Jessica Kennett, along with sophomore keeper Kamryn Stablein and junior defender Maria Gentile, were all named to the All-CAA Second Team. Freshman Claudia Benz rounded out the honorees with a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
Schuck, Gentile and Stablein were part of a defensive unit that led the CAA in goals against average (0.83) and shutouts (9). The 0.80 goals against average is the lowest in 10 years for the Blue Hens and the fourth-lowest in program history.
In addition to her defensive prowess, Schuck played a critical role on set plays, scoring two goals, including the game-winner in a 1-0 defeat of Drexel.
D'Appolonia had a breakout season for the Blue Hens, leading the team in goals (6) and points (16). She also had three golden goal winners in the final five games to help Delaware secure the highest finish ever in dramatic fashion. In the final five games of the regular season, D'Appolonia had a hand in seven of the Blue Hens' 10 goals.
Kennett was a stable in the middle for Delaware, serving as the defensive midfielder on a stout unit, while also logging a career-high two goals, and tied for the team lead with four assists. Her two penalty kick goals this year tied for the most-ever in a single-season by a Blue Hen.
Stablein was a standout in goal, playing over 1,600 minutes, logging 59 saves and guiding the way to nine shutouts on the year. Her .797 save percentage ranked tops in the CAA and her 0.83 GAA ranks among the top-25 in the country. In just two years, Stablein has 11 shutouts, which ranks fifth all-time in program history.
Benz, who played in all 18 games for the Blue Hens, scored two goals and was a sparkplug to Delaware's midfield down the stretch.
