Delaware honored its seven graduating seniors following the match
NEWARK, Del. – Seven members of the Delaware volleyball program laced them up for the final time at the Bob Carpenter Center Sunday afternoon, but could not go out on a high not as the Blue Hens fell in three sets (18-25, 24-26, 22-25) to Elon.
Â
Despite dropping the opening set, the Blue Hens were effective in the middle of the floor with redshirt freshman Adelina Rivera and freshman Ayala Plummer who each had three kills in the opener while freshman Ezgi Basaranlar assisted on 12 of 13 kills in the first.
Â
Rivera and Plummer each finished with seven kills apiece, while Rivera added a pair of rejections and Basaranlar had 32 assists with a pair of kills, five digs and two blocks.
Â
The second set was a back-and-forth affair as Delaware got off to a fast start with senior Maria Bellinger at the service line. She set the Blue Hens up for four unanswered to start the set and force an early Elon timeout. From there, Elon went on a 5-0 run of its own to claw back into it and eventually take a 20-16 lead.
Â
The Blue Hens were able work back into it and tie the set at 24 when Basaranlar picked up a kill, but two unanswered from the Phoenix closed the set.
Â
Bellinger had a team-high 12 kills with four digs and two aces while senior Andie Hanus was her usual self along the back line with 16 digs and two assists.
Â
Senior Bailey Pearlman added eight kills with a block and classmate Gina Lewis saw her first action of the season and had a pair of digs and was effective at the service line.
Â
Following the match, head coach Sara Matthews and the rest of the Delaware coaching staff honored the seven graduating seniors, including Bellinger, Pearlman, Hanus, Lewis along with Kori Rasmussen, Cailey Bracken and Julia Hayes.
Â
The Blue Hens will now prep for the final weekend of the regular season that includes a trip north to take on Northeastern Friday and the defending CAA champions in Hofstra Sunday.
