CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A fourth quarter surge shifted the momentum Friday afternoon as the No. 10 Blue Hens fell to No. 4 Virginia at the UVA Turf Field in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Tied 1-1 entering the fourth quarter, the Cavs collected the game-winning goal in the 49th minute and quickly took control of the game. Virginia followed with back-to-back goals in the 57th and 58th minutes, which gave Delaware too little time to make a comeback.
Sophomore Bo van Hunnik scored the lone goal of the day for the Hens as she hooked it in from the left side of the net with an assist from classmate Grace Miller.
Redshirt senior goalie Sydney Rhodes was spectacular in the cage for the Blue Hens and registered seven total saves, including four in the first quarter.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"Although today's performance and outcome may not have been what we hoped for, I am very proud of our players, team and staff for the season we put together! It took us some time to get things going against a good Virginia team, but unfortunately, we were unable to finish on scoring opportunities. Being back in this NCAA Tournament setting after a one-year absence will provide us with direction and excitement for the next 12 months as we will be eager to return and advance in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. Looking back on our 2019 season, we have a lot celebrate and cherish. Our outstanding team play, love for each other and passion for the sport allowed us to compete for Delaware Pride and put together a very successful season. I want to thank our graduating graduates and seniors Tessa, Milan, Ally, Sydney, Sarah and Zook for their contributions to DEHO in recent months and years. Champions they will be… Blue Hen Champions that is!"
