Blue Hens enjoy a successful signing day filled with athleticism
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball program welcomed seven commitments on National Signing Day in November with a strong mix of talent from the region to join the Blue Hens next fall.
Â
"We're really excited about the group we are bringing in," said 20th-year head coach Jim Sherman. "It was a priority to keep the top guys in the state at home and we feel like we did that while also bringing in some really athletic kids."
Â
Dom Velazquez is one of those local products as a right-handed pitcher from Dover High School in the First State.
Â
"Dom really has one of the best arms in the state and is an impact individual," Sherman said. "His poise and presence is well beyond his years and he's truly a special individual."
Â
A left-handed bat comes by way of Sougegan Coop High School in Mount Vernon, New Hampshire. Daniel Trzepacz will be an option at first base or a corner outfield position in the future for the Blue Hens.
Â
"Daniel is a really physical offensive guy and his swing plays well in our ballpark," Sherman said. "He's one of those lefty power guys that can make an impact."
Â
Another local product is right-handed pitcher Jarrett Weglarz from Bear, Delaware and Appoquinimink High School.
Â
"J.J. is a really gifted athlete and a guy that pitches and plays short stop right now," Sherman said. "He is a big piece of the puzzle for us wanting to get athletic on the mound."
Â
A catcher from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and Kennett High School, Mitchell Balint will bring energy behind the dish.
Â
"Mitchell is a really strong defensive guy and a rock behind the plate," Sherman said. "He brings a lot of energy and is really active on the field in a lot of ways and we're excited to bring him in."
Â
A left-handed arm with a bright future from Yardley, Pennsylvania is Devin Sweeney.
Â
"Devin has command well above his years," Sherman added. "He's a big guy that is a presence on the mound and really controls the plate."
Â
Aidan Kane is an outfielder from Madison, New Jersey and has serious ties to the program. His grandfather is Dave Yates, a member of the 1970 Delaware baseball team that reached the College World Series.
Â
"Aidan is a big and strong guy that is still growing and has a bright future at a corner outfield spot," Sherman said. "He's another lefty bat that plays well into our system and we're excited to see his power numbers in the future."
Â
Rounding out the class is another Delaware product from Milford in Chad Reichhold.
Â
"We're fortunate to keep the best in-state guys and that is Chad," Sherman said. "He is another big guy that has some serious front-line potential when he gets here."
Â
Delaware opens up its 2020 season in Boca Raton, Florida, Feb. 14 for a three-game series with FAU.
