WASHINGTON, D.C. – Delaware's school-record winning streak to open a season came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to George Washington, 66-56, at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Delaware senior Collin Goss, a George Washington transfer, scored a career-high 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting against his former school. Nate Darling added 12 points on the afternoon, while Kevin Anderson contributed 10 and Ryan Allen chipped in nine. Justyn Mutts finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Blue Hens.
Armel Potter paced the Colonials with 19 points, while Arnaldo Toro added 12 points and 17 rebounds.
The game was tied 29-29 at the half, and the contest remained tight until the 4:38 mark when Allen hit a short jumper to pull the Blue Hens even at 50-50. However GW answered with two consecutive buckets and led the rest of the way.
Anderson scored in the paint to make it a 59-56 game with 1:14 to play, but the Colonials scored the final seven points of the contest in the last 46 seconds to pull away.
The Blue Hens shot 40.7 percent from the field, including just 2 of 13 from three-point range. UD limited George Washington to 44.6 percent shooting, and only 6 of 21 from behind the arc.
Delaware jumped out to an early 14-4 lead seven minutes into the game, before George Washington pulled even at 16-16 with 9:26 left in the opening half.
The Blue Hens quickly answered with a seven-point run, and after the Colonials responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points, late layups by Allen and Mutts sent the teams to the break knotted at 29-29.
Martin Ingelsby
"That game was a testament to George Washington, they are a really good defensive group. They frustrated us on our penetration and with their physicality. We got some good looks around the rim and in transition, but just couldn't get the ball to go in the basket. Our defense kept us in the game, but they were able to get downhill in the last five minutes. This was a tough, physical game and the experience will help us moving forward. We're disappointed we didn't get it, but we'll use it as a learning experience and as motivation back at practice."
Collin Goss
"We wanted to see how they were going to guard Justyn and myself, and feed the ball inside to us post players. There's a chip on your shoulder anytime you leave a school, and you always want to play better against them. As a team we feel like we're in a good place at 9-1 heading into the Villanova game."
