CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – A new era of University of Delaware swimming & diving concluded its first season this weekend at the 2019 CAA Championships.
As a team, the Blue Hens took home 24 top-10 finishes at the meet with the women's team piling up 293 points, while the men's tallied 195 over the four days.
"It was a fantastic meet for our program with a lot of electric swims for a bunch of student-athletes," head coach Pablo Marmolejo said. "This group fought every single day, for each other and they fought at the highest level. It was inspiring as a coach to see them improve each day and how much they grew as a team."
The senior class accounted for 12 top-10 finishes, including a thrilling second-third sweep of the women's yard fly by Tessa Hayman (54.65) and Mina Feyrer (54.94). Feyrer wasn't done, also grabbing a fourth-place finish in the 200 yd fly (2:02.03).
Seniors Asher Kiely and Andrew Woerth each grabbed top-10 finishes in their final meets as Blue Hens. Kiely finished ninth in the 100 yd backstroke, while Woerth grabbed a ninth-place finish in the 100 yd free with a time of 45.57.
"Our senior class had a great meet and concluded a lot of great careers on a high note. They have helped us reshape this team through the season and we can't thank them enough," Marmolejo added.
Freshman Taylor Draganosky had a huge debut in her first championship meet, tallying three top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place finish in the 100-yd free with a time of 2:17.79.
Junior Kevin Basch continued his outstanding career with another top-five finish at the CAAs. He touched the wall in 15:49.68, good for fifth place in the 1650 yd free.
Sophomore Bryce Ciecko had a great meet as well for the Blue Hens, grabbing four top-10 finishes, highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the 500-yd free in a time of 4:29.03.
"I'm incredible proud of these student-athletes, this coaching staff and our support staff for believing in the change and trusting the process. The future is bright with this group and we made a lot of progress towards creating the foundation of our program," Marmolejo said.
