NEWARK, Del. – Delaware took a one-point lead into the half but the College of Charleston opened the second period with a commanding run and the Cougars went on to defeat the Blue Hens, 83-75, Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (14-11, 6-6 CAA) jumped out to a 24-14 lead on a Matt Veretto three-pointer with 9:23 to play in the first half, and was still up nine at 32-23 when Eric Carter scored at the 3:40 mark. However the Cougars scored 10 of the final 12 points of the stanza to close within 34-33 at the break.
Charleston (19-6, 8-4 CAA) then opened the second half with an 18-4 spurt, going in front 51-38 with 14:34 to play. The Cougars led by as many as 16 points, and were up double figures the rest of the way until Delaware pulled within 81-75 with 23 seconds on the clock. Grant Riller then misfired on a pair of free throws for the Cougars, but Kevin Anderson missed a layup with 16 seconds to play and Riller added two foul shots to close the scoring.
Anderson and Ryan Allen each scored 17 points for the Blue Hens, while Darian Bryant added 14 points. The Blue Hens shot 48.1 percent from the floor, knocked down 14 of 17 free throw attempts and committed just six turnovers.
Charleston posted a 52.8 field goal percentage, including a 60.0 mark in the second half when the Cougars went 8 of 13 from behind the arc. Riller paced Charleston with 20 points, while Zep Jasper added 14 and Brevin Galloway contributed 13 on the night.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"Charleston has a winning program; they just went into a different gear at the end of the first half and took the wind out of our sails. When they are making shots like they did tonight, they're tough to beat. They were really good in the second half, which was hard for us to overcome. I thought we had an efficient first half and made some shots early, but when we can't get buckets inside it can be hard for us to score. We have to keep a positive attitude, continue to learn and be ready to go Saturday."
Darian Bryant
"Charleston hit big shot after big shot, and we couldn't weather the storm. Give credit to them, they're a good team and we couldn't get stops when we needed them. We had a lot of fight down the stretch, and have to stay together. We've been very good at bouncing back, and we need to take this as a learning experience and find a way to beat UNCW."
Game Notes
• Delaware dropped its third straight game
• Charleston won its fifth in a row
• The Cougars defeated the Blue Hens for the seventh straight meeting
• Bryant's 14 points are his second most of the season
• Anderson posted his highest point total since Nov. 15 at Cornell
• Carter returned to the lineup after missing the William & Mary game with lower back soreness
