NEWARK, Del. – Following the addition of Dave Legg to the defensive coaching staff, Danny Rocco is welcoming in his final piece to the 2019 coaching staff, seven-year D1 coaching veteran, Holman Copeland.
After spending the past two seasons at William and Mary as a secondary coach and an assistant special teams coordinator, Copeland will be working as a defensive assistant coach focusing on the defensive backs.
"We are excited to announce Holman Copeland as our final hire to complete our staff for the upcoming season. Holman will work with Chris Cosh and assist with coaching our secondary. Coach Copeland's primary focus will be working with our corners. Holman has strong ties to our region as well as having valuable experience in the CAA," Rocco Said.
Copeland began his coaching career in 2008 at East Stroudsburg University working as a graduate assistant coach with the cornerbacks. Copeland moved on to become the defensive coordinator/secondary coach at Harry S. Truman High School in Levittown, Pa. for one season, before transitioning to his role as the secondary coach at the University of New Haven in 2010. Copeland returned to East Stroudsburg in 2011 before taking on a position at FBS level University At Buffalo for two seasons where he worked as a graduate assistant coach for the linebackers and safeties. He then spent three years at Central Connecticut State University.
Among his coaching accolades, Copeland was a part of the University of New Haven staff when the team won the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) in 2010. He also produced two all NE-10 conference cornerbacks. During his time at Buffalo, Copeland also helped develop and mentor former first-round draft pick, Khalil Mack.
Copeland also helped the Buffalo defense rank second in the MAC conference in total defense and scoring defense in 2013. In addition, he helped push the secondary at William and Mary to a top-25 national ranking in passing yards allowed in 2018.
Excited for his next step in the CAA, Copeland said, "I am humbled by the opportunity and want to thank Danny Rocco and Chrissi Rawak for believing in me. I plan to continue to uphold the standards that have been set here at the University of Delaware and will continue to pride myself in being a role model and mentor to our student athletes. I am excited to come back to the area where I was born and am ready to get to work.
