TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Delaware women's tennis senior Sarah Hall was named Monday as one of four finalists for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award, which is endowed by Billie Jean King.
The award honors a graduating senior or recent college graduate who played college tennis and demonstrated excellence on and off the court, leadership on his or her team as well as on his or her college campus and in his or her community. The recipient of the award will have demonstrated grit (i.e. passion and perseverance towards long-term goals), a commitment to social justice and equality and will have pushed others to be leaders in addition to demonstrating his or her own leadership.
The ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award winner will be honored by the ITA at a special awards ceremony in August during the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Awards Weekend in New York, in addition to receiving a specially-engraved gift and post-graduate scholarship. The ITA will also donate $1,000 to the tennis program of the institution from which the award winner graduated.
An exercise science major from West Orange, N.J., Hall is a four-year member of the Blue Hens women's tennis team and currently ranks 16th all-time with 54 career singles wins.
Hall has been heavily involved ACL research while also volunteering in physical therapy clinics and interning with the Women's Tennis Association as a Sport Sciences and Medicine intern. Following graduation this coming June, she anticipates pursuing both her masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Delaware's Department of Physical Therapy, which is routinely the top-rated program in the nation.
In addition to her dedication in the classroom and on the court, Hall is a three-year member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, where she is currently on the Senior Leadership Executive Board and Experience Chair. In this position, she is able to ignite and advocate for change on campus while also managing community outreach activities. She also spends time with Delaware Christian Athletes and Blue Hens Mentoring in addition to volunteering with A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital, Special Olympics events and participation with The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation for families affected by childhood cancer.
Hall joins Andrew Akins (Duquesne), Caroline Casper (Pomona Pitzer) and Madison Watts (Webster) as finalists for the award. Each finalist submitted a personal statement as part of the application process, which described the role that tennis and higher education played in their life, the lessons learned, examples of community service and a description of their plans upon graduation, describing hopes and dreams to be pursued.
